The communication secret

The communication secret

Imagine approaching one hundred random people and asking them what they believe to be the key to being a successful communicator. Some may say it’s down to being a great speaker, a proportion may say it’s down to being well read, a few may say communication is all about our ability to write and a few may point to great body language.

But how many of those one hundred people would say that listening is the key to being a successful communicator? If you’re thinking a very small proportion then you’d be right.

From our research and experience, the majority of people don’t perceive listening as being the most important part of communication. But we know this isn’t true. Studies point to the fact that of the time we spend communicating with one another, 9% of the time is spent writing, 16% reading, 30% speaking, and a massive 45% of the time listening. But most people aren’t aware that listening is the key to communicating and therefore don’t invest time learning how to listen effectively. Our education system seems to also miss out the importance of listening and neglects to include any listening syllabus within our schools.

But this communication secret is one for YOU to use to your advantage. What does it mean for you if most people don’t know how powerful listening is? It means that with just a little effort you’ll be a much better communicator than the majority of people around you. If listening is the foundation of being a great communicator and because most people are unaware of this; what do you think will happen if you invest just a little time to improve your listening ability?

Well first of all it won’t take much for you to become a better listener than the majority of the population simply because of the lack of awareness we’ve identified. And if you’re a better listener then you’ll be a better communicator. Absolutely you will. It’s a fact that good communicators are successful people. The reasons are far and varied but you know this to be true. And if you want to unlock your potential you need to be able to communicate with the rest of the world and the secret is down to being a great listener.

Discovering this communication secret means you can unlock your potential though the power of listening. And the best news is that to be a better listener than most people, all that’s needed is a small and focused effort on your behalf. Investing a little time and energy into learning how to be a better listener will put you into the top few percent of communicators and achievers. So if you want to join this small and elite community of communicators, get started right now on developing your listening skills.

Listen to be heard

Listen to be heard

Learning to be a great listener can change your life. We know this to be true but to help demonstrate what a difference listening can make, we thought that we should share some stories of highly successful people who put listening down to the key to their success.

Let’s take Joe Shuster, a highly successful entrepreneur who amongst many ventures, was a co-founder of DC comics. Joe identified listening from an early age as a skill he needed to master that would go on to form the basis of his fortune. Even during his teenage years, Joe used his ability to listen to his advantage. He worked as a caddy at a golf club and actively listened to the conversations amongst the club members, many of which held highly senior business positions. For example, G.H. Kraft, one of the founders of the Kraft Food Company. Joe identified the insight he got from listening to the conversations at the club as having a domino effect on his life’s path to many entrepreneurial ventures.

Other successful stories point to the inseparability of leadership and listening. Tom Moron, President of Mutual of America, one of the most successful insurance companies in the USA, believes that the growth of Mutual is dependent on generating well thought out ideas. He highlights that only through listening can ideas be created, adapted, improved and incorporated into the DNA of Mutual. One cannot lead an organisation without paying careful attention to ones listening skills. Make sense right? If we want to lead and inspire others then we need to understand how others think and the way to do this is by listening. Peter Nulty, member of Fortune magazine’s National Hall of Fame concurs with Moron’s view. Nulty believes that of all the skills needed to be a leader, listening is the most valuable but one of the least understood.

Ben Sachs is a highly successful entrepreneur who specialises in business turnaround opportunities. He regards listening as the foundation to make his recommendations to change the fortunes of businesses he helps. Quite simply, by asking the right questions and taking the time to listen to responses across all levels of an organisation allows him to see through the problems in a business and find the right strategy.

The list of extremely successful individuals who have identified listening as the secret to their success is much longer than the few examples we’ve highlighted here. If you’re still unsure of the impact becoming a great listener can have on your life, we challenge you to immerse yourself in our ‘Quick Start’ tool kit for one month to see the difference yourself.
